The collection spans the history of the country from early political flags and broadsides to noteworthy contemporary designers. The collection includes more than 40 silkscreen posters from the WPA (1935–1945). Significant artists and designers represented are: Herbert Bayer, Lester Beall, Joseph Binder, Erik Nitsche, Paul Rand Ladislav Sutnar, and Beatrice Wood. The contemporary component includes Charles Spencer Anderson, Art Chantry, Seymour Chwast, Paul Davis, April Greiman, Gunter Rambow and Wolfgang Weingart among others.
The collection has a number of paintings by important African American artists such as John Biggers, Palmer Hayden, Jacob Lawrence and William H. Johnson.
