Walter Dexel (German, 1890–1973) was a De Stijl-influenced, abstract artist, who exhibited regularly at Berlin’s Galerie der Sturm and with the Novembergruppe in the 1920s. He was also a visionary exhibition coordinator, who transformed the Kunstverein Jena into a vibrant showcase for avant-garde art and architecture between 1916 and 1928. In addition, he was a typographer and designer, whose notable Lichtreklame (light advertisements) for the streets of Jena of 1924–25—many of which were realized—were widely reproduced in journals including Die Form and Das neue Frankfurt. Between 1928 and 1931, Dexel exhibited with Kurt Schwitters’ Ring “neue Werbegestalter” (Circle of New Advertising Designers) and later taught Gebrauchsgraphik (commercial art) in Magdeburg (1928–35).

We share with you today a selection of Dexel’s posters created in Jena and Magdeburg between 1924 and 1930.
