Max Bill (Swiss, 1908–1994) was just twenty-four when he designed the covers of the Swiss anti-fascist journal Information: Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft, Erziehung, Technik, Kunst (Information: Economics, Science, Education, Technology, Art). He had recently returned to Zurich after spending four semesters studying at the Dessau Bauhaus (1927–1928). He likely met the journal’s editor Ignazio Silone in the intellectual circles surrounding Sigfried Giedion. A committed communist and critic of Italian and German fascism, Silone was in exile in Switzerland. His name never appeared in the journal and Bill’s credit as typographer appeared only once in the first issue. The timing of the journal was significant: its seventeen issues appeared in the months leading up to the election of the Nazi party in Germany and lasted through the regime’s first year in power. An article in the August/September 1932 issue by an author identified as Faber, “Das Bauhaus in Dessau vor Torschluss” (The Bauhaus Dessau Before the Doors Close), detailed the school’s recent demise.
