Upon Nazi Germany’s invasion of Soviet Russia on June 22, 1941, the Organizing Committee of the Union of Soviet Artists (SKh SSSR) convened and resolved to initiate the TASS (Telegrafnoe agenstvo Sovetskogo Soiuza; Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union) Window Studio. Based on the earlier ROSTA (Rossiiskoe telegrafnoe agenstvo; Russian Telegraph Agency) Window Studios in Moscow and Petrograd, in operation between 1919 and 1921, large-scale, easily-comprehensible, hand-stenciled posters produced at the Moscow TASS studio could quickly transmit news of contemporary events to remote areas of the country and abroad. 1,485 sequentially numbered TASS posters were issued between 1941 and 1946. We bring you fourteen of these posters today. If dates do not appear on the posters, they are derived by numerical sequence and appear in [brackets]. Print runs are noted if they appear on the posters. The English-language standard work on TASS posters is Peter Kort Zegers and Douglas Druick, ed.
