Having exhibited widely before the war with the Expressionist group Die Brücke and others, by the 1920s Emil Nolde (German, 1867–1956) was regarded as an established figure of the German avant-garde. In 1921, he was the subject of a major monograph (Max Sauerlandt, Emil Nolde. Munich: Kurt Wolff Verlag, 1921) and in 1926–27 of a catalogue raisonné of his graphic work (Gustav Schleifer, Das graphische Werk von Emil Nolde, 1910–1925. Berlin: Euphorion, 1926–27). On the occasion of Nolde’s sixtieth birthday (August 7, 1927), he was honored with a Festschrift (Rudolf Probst, ed. Festschrift für Emil Nolde anlässlich seines 60. Geburtstages. Dresden: Verlag Neue Kunst Fides, 1927) and a major exhibition in Dresden that traveled to Hamburg, Kiel, Essen, and Wiesbaden.
