Last week, to great excitement, Black Power to Black People: Branding the Black Panther Party opened at the Poster House, New York (March 2–September 10, 2023). Organized by curator and Poster House Education Coordinator Es-pranza Humphrey, the exhibition is largely drawn from our collection, including some thirty loans. These include early issues of The Black Panther newspaper with illustrations depicting police as “pigs,” with resonant indictments of excessive violence; campaign posters for Eldridge Cleaver, Angela Davis, and Huey Newton; and original artwork by the Black Panther Party’s Minister of Culture, Emory Douglas. It has been receiving positive early press—see for example this in The New Yorker. We hope you will have a chance to visit. The installation photographs shown here are by Samuel Morgan Photography, Poster House.
