The worldwide economic depression following the crash of 1929 resulted in a lull in building projects and a burgeoning of “paper” or “fantasy” architecture in Germany. This pair of images by the Hamburg-based architect Emil Bruhn (German, 1905–1979) was created for an exhibition of conceptual (rather than actual) projects to be held in Hamburg in late 1932. Bearing the inscription “We want to live, play, and exercise in our garden and to use it like our home,” this work by Bruhn, who had worked under Ludwig Mies van der Rohe on the Barcelona Pavilion in 1929, offers an almost cinematic mise-en-scène of healthy, modern, outdoor living against a backdrop of streamlined domestic architecture. Bruhn constructs this tableau through a vocabulary of flat graphic planes, photomontage, and precise, perspectival architectural rendering. Coinciding with the election of the National Socialists to power, the exhibition was canceled and the works were not displayed. Merrill 914-867-8200 mcbcollect@mindspring.com
