Today we highlight news of our donation of the Eugene B. Sloan Civil Rights Collection to The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, College of Charleston, South Carolina. With its rich holdings of archival materials documenting the unique history and culture of African Americans in Charleston, the South Carolina Lowcountry, and beyond, the Avery Center is an ideal home for this collection. I am grateful to Dr. Tamara T. Butler, Executive Director of the Avery, and John W. White, Dean of Libraries, for their stewardship of the collection. The collection, which we highlighted in a newsletter of June 12, 2020, includes reel-to-reel tape recordings made by the newspaper journalist Eugene B. Sloan in South Carolina in the late 1960s of speeches by Martin Luther King, Jr., Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, and Robert E. Scoggin (the “Grand Dragon” of South Carolina’s United Klans of America ). In the College of Charleston’s official announcement of the donation, Andrew T. Hsu, President, noted: The gift from Merrill C. Berman of the Eugene B. Sloan Civil Rights Collection is a perfect match to the mission and focus of the Avery Research Center. […] The Avery Research Center is a premier repository for Black history in the Lowcountry and having the 1967 recording of Martin Luther King Jr. in Charleston is an incredible addition to our world-class collections at the Avery Research Center.
