El Lissitzky is an artist who stands at the heart of the collection. Our holdings of his graphic work are deep and extensive. In 2018, we issued the catalogue El Lissitzky: Graphic Work in the Merrill C. Berman Collection. Since that
time, we have added some significant items, which we highlight here. Still missing: Lissitzky’s 1919 Had Gadya (thankfully offered as a reprint by the wonderful Nancy Perloff of the Getty Research Institute in 2004). Our friends at the GRI retain the essential archive of Lisstistky’s letters to Sophie Lissitzky-Küppers and photographs. We owe ongoing gratitude to Peter Nisbet, whose catalogue raisonné of Lissitzky’s typographical work remains the standard source. Richard Anderson’s new book Wolkenbügel (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2024) is a magisterial addition to the scholarship.
