Architect, journal editor, and independent spirit, Hendrikus Th. Wijdeveld (Dutch, 1885–1987) does not fit neatly into histories of the avant-garde. The decorative style of his gold-tinged journal Wendingen (Upheaval or Turnings; Amsterdam, 1918–1931) might appear a late incarnation of Art Nouveau/Jugendstil aesthetics. But while it looked back to the arts and crafts movement and featured the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, it was also a vehicle for El Lissitzky’s Prouns and Peter Alma’s Pictorial Statistics and Social Graphics. Wijdeveld, who lived to be 102, was present to shape his retrospectives at the Stedelijk Museum and other institutions well into the 1980s.
