Today we feature a selection of works by artist and activist Emory Douglas (American, born 1943). Between 1967 and 1982, Douglas—who Huey Newton had appointed “Revolutionary Artist” and the official “Minister of Culture” for the Black Panther Party—established a distinctive, highly legible visual language for the organization. Reproduced on the covers of the Black Panther Newspaper and upon posters, flyers, pamphlets, greeting cards, and other ephemeral materials, Douglas’s imagery across multiple platforms carried a message of resistance, defiance, and self-determination. Today, Douglas continues to practice his art and, in his words, to “communicate to the community,” through teaching and speaking engagements in the United States and abroad.
