April Greiman is a self-described “thinker and transmedia artist-designer,” who is perhaps best known for her innovative use of computer technology as a design tool. Originally from New York, Greiman studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and then at the Allgemeine Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel, Switzerland. In 1976 she moved to Los Angeles and, shortly thereafter, recognized the potential of the original 1984 Macintosh computer as a tool for creative exploration. As a graduate student at Basel’s Allgemeine Kunstgewerbeschule, Greiman studied with Armin Hofmann (1920–2020) and Wolfgang Weingart (1941–2021), two masters of modern Swiss design whose work is also represented in the collection. This training instilled in Greiman a thorough understanding of the principles of the modernist grid. It also emboldened her defiance of it through mechanisms such as photographic collage, layering, and the diagonal placement of text. In the early 1990s, Merrill acquired material directly from the artist. The collection includes some twenty posters—a selection of which we share with you here—as well as numerous examples of printed ephemera.
