Following our recent newsletter on László Peri’s contribution to the landmark 1923 Novembergruppe exhibition, this week we consider the group more broadly. Established in Berlin in 1918, the Novembergruppe (November Group), was an association of politically left-leaning artists, who named themselves after Germany’s (failed) November Revolution. In the 1920s, an international array of members including Jankel Adler, Henryk Berlewi, Hannah Höch, El Lissitzky, László Moholy-Nagy, László Peri, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Issacher Ber Ryback exhibited annually in the Novembergruppe section of the Grosse Berliner Kunstausstellung (Great Berlin Art Exhibition). These yearly exhibitions—supported by funds raised at bi-annual fancy-dress balls—were among Berlin’s most important showcases for avant-garde art and architecture.
