In 1924, Ladislav Sutnar (American, born Bohemia. 1897–1976) joined the Svaz Československého díla (Czechoslovak Arts and Crafts Association) and went on to become one of its major officers. In addition to designing the graphic materials that accompanied the organization’s Baba Housing Estate exhibition in 1932, he designed its journals Výtvarné snahy (Art Endeavors), in 1929–1930, and Žijeme: Obrázkový magazin dnešni doby (We Live: Picture magazine of contemporary times; Prague: Svaz československá dila and Družstevní práce, 1931–1933).

Sutnar also acted as managing editor of this journal, which scholar Iva Janáková-Knobloch has characterized as the period’s “most systematic promoter of Functionalism in habitation, architecture, and general lifestyle.”
