Lois Mailou Jones (American, 1905–1998) was a prominent artist and educator, who worked across mediums: from costume and textile design, to oil and watercolor painting, and collage. She was influenced by the Harlem Renaissance and her extensive travels in Africa. Jones taught at Howard University for much of her life. The above poster, a recent acquisition for the collection, showcases Jones’s ink and brush illustration. It accompanies a detailed list of notable events in African-American history, including the births and deaths of important figures and anniversaries of emancipations. The poster was issued by Carter G. Woodson for his book The African Background Outlined. Jones provided many illustrations and dust jacket designs for Woodward’s Associated Publishers from the 1930s to the 1950s.
