This poster, reproducing Peter Hujar’s iconic image, was produced by the Gay Liberation Front (GLF). The GLF, an activist group formed in 1969 in the wake of the Stonewall Rebellion, created the poster for the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade of June 28, 1970. Peter Hujar, not well known at the time and not a member of the GLF, was the partner of one of the group's founders, Jim Fouratt (second from the right). Fouratt had participated in the Stonewall riots the year before. Hujar staged the photograph on Wooster Street in Lower Manhattan. The image, created as a recruiting poster for the first ever gay pride march, fifty-two years ago today, is widely considered to be one of the most iconic photographs of gay liberation and queer pride.
