Milton Glaser, Mahalia Jackson at Lincoln Center, 1967

Milton Glaser (American, 1929–2020)
Two posters: Mahalia Jackson at Lincoln Center, 1967
Both: Lithograph, 37 5/8 x 24 1/4” (95.6 x 61.6 cm)

In March 1967, American Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson (1911–1972) gave an Easter Concert at Lincoln Center. For the occasion, Milton Glaser (1929–2020), one of the most influential American designers of the second half of the twentieth century, designed the above posters. His image of Jackson in profile echoed his iconic poster of Bob Dylan, also in profile, of the previous year. Glaser’s work helped to define the visual language of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as the American counterculture movement.

Two mirrored versions of the poster were printed: one of Jackson’s right profile and another of her left. This allowed grouping of the poster to create a kaleidoscope-like effect, as seen below.

Steven Heller, Mirko Ilić, and Beth Kleber’s comprehensive book Milton Glaser: Pop, was published by Phaidon last year.
