The powerhouse behind the scholarship on Russian and Eastern European works in the collection is the incomparable Dr. Alla Rosenfeld. In her capacity as Research Consultant for these areas, over the last seven years Alla has completed book-length monographs on artists including Natan Altman, Boris
Aronson, Henryk Berlewi, Nikolai Dolgorukov, Nikolai Sedelnikov, and Konstantin Vialov. She has written thematic studies of Russian and Soviet Theater, Jewish Artists, Jewish Identity, and Early Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Commercial Design. She has applied her same rigorous scholarly standards to online exhibitions on the topics of the Visualization of Data in Soviet Russia and Early Soviet Anti-Religious Propaganda (which she is seen preparing above), as well as artist’s pages on Jankel Adler, Dmitri Bulanov, Aleksandr Deineka, Vasilii Elkin, Dmitri Moor, and Nikolai and Aleksei Ushin. Not to mention her numerous newsletters on tightly focused topics. Before she came to us, Alla, who earned her Ph.D. at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, was Curator of European and Russian Art at the Mead Art Museum, Amherst College (2017–18). Prior to that she was Senior Curator of Russian Art at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University (1992–2006)—an appointment profiled in the New York Times (October 22, 1995)—and Adjunct Professor in Rutgers’s departments of Slavic Languages and Literatures and Art History (2011–17). Alla has received fellowships from the Belvedere Museum, Vienna, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Her many exhibitions and publications include: Moscow Conceptualism in Context (2011), A World of Stage: Russian Design for Theater, Opera, and Dance (2007), and Art of the Baltics: The Struggle for Freedom of Artistic Expression under the Soviets, 1945–1991 (2001).
