Today we feature the work of Boris Ignatovich (Russian, 1899–1976), a pivotal figure in the history of Russian avant-garde photography. Ignatovich worked in portraiture, photojournalism, aerial photography, and as a filmmaker. In the late 1920s he was a member of the Oktiabr’ (October) artists’ group alongside colleagues such as Aleksandr Rodchenko and El Lissitzky. In 1969, in honor of his seventieth birthday, the Union of Soviet Journalists held a one-man exhibition of Ignatovich’s work at the Moscow Central House of Journalists. For this exhibition, Ignatovich printed eighty-five large-scale gelatin silver prints, including the seven featured here.
