The venerable German-language journal Aufbau (Reconstruction) was founded in New York in 1934 for German-Jewish immigrants. This special issue of the journal, now based in Switzerland, is dedicated to the “Ambassadors of Modernity: Nazi Refugees Who Transformed New York into an Art Metropolis.” It includes articles on Leo Castelli, Otto Kallir, Ronald Lauder, Paul Rosenberg, and Helen Serger, among others. The article on Berman, which reworks the title of MoMA’s 2020–2021 exhibition, can be read in English here: “Connoisseur, Curator, Educator—and Publisher: Merrill C. Berman, The Collector Reinvented.”
