Research is a publication that offers in-depth, scholarly essays on a particular work (or group of works) in the Merrill C. Berman Collection. It is inspired by and follows the approach taken in The Museum of Modern Art’s 2020 exhibition catalogue Engineer, Agitator, Constructor, in which scholars were invited to write on key objects from the collection that were acquired by MoMA.
Research highlights significant objects that remain in the collection. The essays presented here proceed from the premise that research is an ongoing process and that scholarship is at its best when it accepts lack of closure, is as transparent about what is known as what it not, and poses as many questions as it answers.
Each essay is downloadable as a PDF. These essays will eventually be anthologized into a single printed volume.
